Mexico Reports 7.65 Million Students Screened as Follow-Up Care Lags

Officials press parents to act after new data show most clinic referrals remain unfulfilled.

Overview

  • Authorities say 7,653,564 primary students have been evaluated for nutrition, dental health and vision—about 68% of the 11.2 million goal—across 60,000 schools with 8,118 health brigadistas.
  • Screenings indicate widespread needs: roughly half of students have nutritional issues, about six in ten have dental problems, and around four in ten are candidates for corrective lenses.
  • Of approximately 3.826 million students referred for nutritional follow-up, only 7.2% (275,126) have attended appointments, and dental follow-up stands at 4.3%—about 197,000 of 4.592 million identified.
  • Results and clinic referrals are available via email, SMS or the resultados.vidasaludable.sep.gob.mx portal, with QR codes and contacts for scheduling; about 100,000 free glasses have been delivered, with further eyewear tied to second evaluations through partners such as Salud Digna, Coppel and BBVA.
  • Coverage varies by state, with Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Puebla, Chiapas and Morelos slated to finish next, ten entities above 80% progress, and Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Quintana Roo trailing below 60%.
