Mexico Reports 40% Progress on Irrigation Overhaul, Sets 2.8 Billion m³ Water Recovery Goal

The government plans to redirect water saved from farm modernization to household supply.

Overview

  • Conagua reports active works in 17 of 18 irrigation districts, with the final district scheduled to be incorporated before the end of the current administration.
  • For 2025, planned works include 500 km of canal piping and rehabilitation, 6,084 hectares of on‑farm technification, 139 photovoltaic well retrofits, 11 pumping plants, 41 measurement structures, 8 diversion dams, and 1,936 gates.
  • The Región Lagunera initiative is 67% complete and aims to deliver safer drinking water to more than one million people and protect aquifers affected by arsenic.
  • More than 63 billion pesos are allocated for 2025–2030 to technify over 200,000 hectares and benefit about 225,000 producers.
  • The plan rests on four pillars: irrigation technification, strategic infrastructure and river sanitation, ordering of water concessions, and efficient agricultural use.
