Mexico Reports 40% Drop in Intentional Homicides Over 15 Months

A national registry of missing persons is prepared for release, reflecting pressure to address disappearances.

Overview

  • Official SESNSP data show the daily average fell from 86.9 homicides at the start of the administration to 52.4 in December 2025, the lowest monthly level since 2016, with a 2025 rate of 17.5 per 100,000 inhabitants.
  • President Claudia Sheinbaum credits the decline to strengthened intelligence and investigative work enabled by legal changes that allow the SSPC and the National Intelligence Center to conduct public‑security investigations in coordination with federal and state prosecutors.
  • Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch reported 40,735 arrests for high‑impact crimes, more than 318 tonnes of drugs seized including over 4 million fentanyl pills, 21,400 firearms confiscated, and 1,887 meth labs dismantled from October 2024 through December 2025.
  • Half of 2025’s homicides were concentrated in seven states—Guanajuato, Chihuahua, Baja California, Sinaloa, State of Mexico, Guerrero and Michoacán—while extortion rose 2.3% year over year and is a priority target for reduction in 2026.
  • NGO Redim documented 1,991 child homicides and 10,684 disappearances of minors from January to November 2025, with 2,850 still unlocated and a 30% rise in active missing‑minor cases compared with 2024.
