Mexico Reports 40% Drop in Homicides After 15-Month Security Push

Extortion now shifts to federal jurisdiction as authorities move to target the crime more aggressively.

Overview

  • Official data show the daily average of homicidios dolosos fell from 86.9 in September 2024 to 52.4 in December 2025, with 20,674 cases recorded in 2025 versus 26,715 in 2024.
  • Federal operations from October 2024 to December 2025 produced 40,735 arrests, 318 tonnes of drugs seized including over 4 million fentanyl pills, 21,400 firearms secured, and 1,887 clandestine labs dismantled.
  • Twenty-six of 32 states reduced their daily homicide averages, led by Zacatecas (−71.1%), Chiapas (−58.6%) and Quintana Roo (−56.8%), while seven entities accounted for just over half of cases nationally.
  • Extortion rose 2.3% year over year, prompting a National Agreement that gives the Fiscalía General de la República primary investigative authority, with the 089 hotline reporting that roughly three in four attempts were thwarted through guidance.
  • Beyond Mexico, Santa Fe province in Argentina expanded AI-enabled video monitoring and adopted a “virtual flagrancy” protocol as Rosario’s 2025 homicides rose to 115, an increase of more than 27%.
