Mexico Reports 37% Drop in Daily Homicides as Security Cabinet Details Arrests and Michoacán Push

Authorities credit an intelligence-led, prevention-focused strategy for the downward trend.

Overview

  • Official SESNSP figures show the daily homicide average fell from 86.9 in September 2024 to 54.5 in October 2025, the lowest month of the period and roughly 32 fewer killings per day.
  • Security officials reported more than 37,000 detentions for high‑impact crimes in 13 months, nearly 300 tons of drugs seized, about 4 million fentanyl pills confiscated, 18,981 firearms recovered, and 1,614 meth labs dismantled.
  • Seven states accounted for about 51% of homicides between January and October 2025: Guanajuato, Chihuahua, Baja California, Sinaloa, Estado de México, Guerrero, and Michoacán.
  • Extortion increased 22.9% in the latest comparisons, even as categories such as femicide and several forms of violent robbery declined, according to the national security secretariat.
  • Following the Nov. 1 killing of Uruapan’s mayor, the federal government launched Plan Paricutín with 10,506 Army, Air Force, and National Guard personnel in Michoacán, and investigators are re‑questioning the mayor’s municipal escorts as ballistic tests proceed after one acknowledged firing at the attacker.
