Mexico Reports 32% Drop in Homicides in Sheinbaum’s First Year as Disappearances Rise

Officials credit coordinated operations and prevention programs for the decline.

Overview

  • SESNSP said the daily average of intentional homicides fell from 86.9 in September 2024 to 59.5 in September 2025, marking the lowest September level since 2015.
  • Seven states accounted for 51% of homicides from January to September 2025: Guanajuato, Chihuahua, Baja California, Sinaloa, State of Mexico, Guerrero and Michoacán.
  • SSPC reported 34,690 arrests for high‑impact crimes, the seizure of 17,200 firearms and 283 tonnes of drugs, and the destruction of 1,564 meth labs, including more than 3 million fentanyl pills seized.
  • Segob said 6,420 civilian firearms were surrendered through the “Sí al Desarme, Sí a la Paz” program, 5,821 toy weapons were exchanged for educational toys, and peace outreach efforts reached about 2.49 million people.
  • RNPDNO recorded 14,761 people disappeared or not located between Oct. 1, 2024 and Sept. 30, 2025—about 54% above the prior administration’s annual average—as academics caution homicide declines may not capture the full scope of violence.
