Mexico Reports 31 Human Screwworm Myiasis Cases in Southern States

First detected in April, the outbreak has prompted weekly epidemiological bulletins with most patients now treated on an outpatient basis.

  • Of the 31 confirmed cases by July 22, 29 are in Chiapas and two in Campeche.
  • Patients range from 17 to 86 years old, including 21 men and 10 women.
  • Larvae of the screwworm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax have infested lesions mostly on the head, followed by neck and torso.
  • Three patients remain hospitalized while the rest have been discharged or continue under outpatient care.
  • Health authorities continue surveillance through the National Epidemiological Surveillance System’s bulletins.
