Mexico Renews Extradition Push in Ayotzinapa Case as Parents March in the Capital

Parents mark 11 years demanding Army records, extraditions.

Overview

  • President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government has sent multiple diplomatic letters to Israel seeking the extradition of former AIC chief Tomás Zerón, who has a Mexican arrest warrant and is accused of torture and other offenses.
  • Sheinbaum also confirmed formal requests to the U.S. to extradite two suspects linked to the case; families specifically name former Iguala bar-andilla judge José Ulises Bernabé and continue to press for his return.
  • A megamarch is scheduled to depart the Ángel de la Independencia at 4 p.m. toward the Zócalo, following days of protests that included a truck ramming and arson at the gate of Campo Militar 1-A with explosive devices thrown.
  • The administration pledged there will be no repression of protests and highlighted a new special prosecutor and continued meetings with families, but it has not publicly delivered the Army’s 800 folios or secured the extraditions.
  • Families reiterated five investigative demands: delivery of the 800 Army documents, clarification of 17 students reportedly taken to the Iguala bar-andilla, renewed analysis of cellphone data, the extraditions of Zerón and Bernabé, and probes of Guerrero officials.
