Mexico Remittances Fall 8.3% in August, Extending Longest Slide Since 2013

A cooling U.S. labor market is curbing migrants’ capacity to send money.

Overview

  • Banxico reported August inflows of US$5.578 billion, marking a fifth straight year-over-year drop and taking January–August receipts to US$40.467 billion, down 5.9% from 2024.
  • Over the last 12 months through August, remittances totaled US$62.212 billion, slightly below the prior 12‑month period.
  • The number of transactions fell 7.2% year over year in August, the average transfer was US$402 for the month and US$393 year to date, and about 99.2% of inflows arrived via electronic transfers.
  • Remittances sent abroad by residents in Mexico declined 12.1% to US$91 million in August, narrowing the monthly remittance account surplus to US$5.487 billion.
  • Analysts tie the downturn to weaker U.S. hiring, tighter immigration enforcement and a new 1% levy on cash remittances, with Mexico’s government offering reimbursements and criticizing the U.S. measure.
