Mexico Reinforces Monitoring at Chichonal Volcano After Seismic Uptick

Overview

  • Specialists from SSN, UNICACH and CENAPRED documented a slight rise in seismicity between June 6 and August 21, 2025.
  • Chiapas civil protection reported 39 earthquakes on August 18 within about two kilometers of the crater, representing 72% of recent local seismicity.
  • CNPC, CENAPRED and state agencies installed a Puesto de Mando and increased 24/7 seismic, thermal, geochemical and visual surveillance.
