Mexico Registers M4.4 Quake Near Los Mochis as SASMEX Stays Silent

Because the events fell below Mexico City's activation thresholds for public sirens, authorities emphasized routine monitoring and preparedness.

Overview

  • Mexico’s seismic service reported a magnitude 4.4 earthquake at 05:44 on September 14 with an epicenter southwest of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, at a depth of about 10 km.
  • A magnitude 4.5 quake was logged southwest of Pijijiapan, Chiapas, at 19:05 on September 13, with a depth of roughly 8.6 km.
  • During the early hours of September 13, 34 tremors were recorded nationwide, the strongest a magnitude 3.9 near Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca.
  • SASMEX did not issue a citywide alert because the quakes did not meet its magnitude–distance criteria, which require about magnitude 6 at distances over 350 km or magnitude 5 for closer events.
  • No damage or injuries have been reported, and Protección Civil reiterated standard guidance such as staying calm, seeking structural safe zones, and avoiding windows and elevators.
