Mexico Readies for Cold Front 15 With Sharp Temperature Drop, Mountain Snow and Strong Winds

SMN says a polar trough, jet support and deep ocean moisture will drive hazardous wind, rain and freezing conditions across multiple regions.

Overview

  • SMN/Conagua reports Front 15 is moving across the northwest and north, with snow or sleet expected in the sierras of Baja California, Sonora and Chihuahua, extending into northern Sinaloa and Durango overnight into Thursday.
  • Minimum temperatures of -10 to -5 °C are forecast in high terrain of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua and Durango, with additional ranges in central and northern states dropping to between -5 and 0 °C or 0 to 5 °C.
  • Very strong gusts are forecast at 60–80 km/h in Sonora, Chihuahua and Durango, with a dry line over Coahuila adding strong winds across the north and northeast.
  • Moisture from the Pacific, Gulf and Caribbean interacting with low‑pressure channels will bring showers and areas of heavy rain to the west, center, south and southeast, with risks of urban flooding, landslides and river rises.
  • The front is expected to weaken by Thursday as a new system approaches for the weekend, and IAM/UdeG projects La Niña will keep late‑2025 drier in Guadalajara with warmer days, cold mornings and a higher chance of winter air‑quality contingencies.
