Mexico Raises Weekly Fuel Subsidies and Boosts Diesel Support

The finance ministry increased IEPS offsets for the July 25–31 week to blunt pump-price spikes after recent US–Iran attacks drove up oil benchmarks.

Overview

  • The Treasury (SHCP) raised fiscal support for the week of July 25–31 so consumers pay less IEPS tax at the pump.
  • Diesel received the largest increase: a 5.27-peso per liter subsidy equal to 71.58 percent, leaving an IEPS quota of 2.09 pesos per liter; Magna gets 2.56 pesos per liter (38.18 percent) with a 4.14-peso IEPS quota and Premium gets 1.70 pesos per liter (30.06 percent) with a 3.96-peso IEPS quota.
  • The decree was published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación and is the government response to a recent run-up in global oil prices after exchanges of attacks between the United States and Iran.
  • Market tracker PETROIntelligence reported national average pump prices on July 24 near 23.69 pesos for Magna, 28.51 pesos for Premium and 27.06 pesos for diesel, with only small day-to-day moves noted before the new subsidies took effect.
  • The government is using weekly IEPS adjustments plus Profeco field checks and voluntary agreements with gas stations to make sure the subsidies reach consumers and to limit transport-cost and inflation pressure from higher diesel prices.
