Mexico Publishes 2026 Minimum Wage Buying-Power Estimates Ahead of Jan. 1 Increase

The administration highlights food-basket calculations to illustrate the impact on household budgets.

Overview

  • The 2026 daily minimum wage is set at 315.04 pesos nationwide and 440.87 pesos in the Northern Border Free Zone, taking effect January 1 with monthly equivalents of 9,582.47 and 13,409.80 pesos, respectively.
  • Government figures say one day’s pay at the new rate can buy 14.8 kg of tortilla, 6.5 kg of eggs, and 7.1 kg of beans, using November Mexico City canasta prices.
  • Based on the same price series for public markets, the daily wage could also cover about 5 liters of cooking oil, 8 kg of sugar, 10.5 kg of potatoes, 2 kg of chicken breast, or 1 kg of beef steak.
  • Officials characterize the increase as part of a 154% strengthening of purchasing power and present it as a unanimous agreement among government, employers, and workers.
  • President Claudia Sheinbaum links the pact to a gradual move to a 40-hour workweek and reiterates a goal to lift the minimum toward roughly 440 pesos per day by 2030.
