Mexico Probes Death of 'Papayita' After Alleged Workplace Poisoning in Torreón

Prosecutors are pursuing video evidence after relatives alleged a pattern of workplace bullying.

Overview

  • Carlos Gurrola, 47, died on September 18 at IMSS Clinic 71 after about three weeks hospitalized with severe airway and lung burns following an August 30 incident in which he allegedly drank degreaser from his bottle.
  • The episode occurred at HEB Senderos, where Gurrola worked through the cleaning contractor Multiservicios Rocasa; HEB stated he was not on its direct payroll.
  • Coahuila’s Fiscalía opened an investigation, requested surveillance recordings, and interviewed witnesses, with the regional delegate noting indications the bottle had previously contained chemicals; no arrests have been announced.
  • Relatives report ongoing harassment at the workplace and say notice and medical assistance were delayed, leading the family to take him to the Red Cross before transfers to IMSS facilities.
  • The family alleges a coworker discarded the Electrolit bottle and rejects an account attributed to Rocasa that suggested suicide, while they continue pressing for accountability through a Facebook page.
