Mexico, Peru and U.S. Register Dozens of Small Quakes Over 24 Hours, No Major Damage

Officials report magnitudes below alert thresholds with no injuries or significant damage.

  • Mexico’s seismic service logged 20 events since 03:00 local time on Jan. 13, with the strongest a magnitude 4.0 at 07:00 near Pijijiapan, Chiapas at 16.4 km depth, and no SASMEX alert was issued.
  • In the early hours of Jan. 12 in Chiapas, the SSN recorded a magnitude 4.1 southwest of Tonalá at 03:11 and a magnitude 3.1 southwest of Pichucalco at 00:38, with no significant impacts reported.
  • Peru’s IGP reported a magnitude 4.8 quake at 02:28 on Jan. 13 about 295 km south of Tacna at 138 km depth, producing intensity III in Tacna and no reported damages or casualties.
  • Late Jan. 12 in northern Peru, consecutive magnitude 4.1 and 4.2 events were recorded near Sullana, Piura, with reported intensities of II–III and no major damage.
  • The USGS listed 17 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater in the past 24 hours across U.S. regions, led by a magnitude 4.2 in the Aleutians, as agencies continue real‑time monitoring and public preparedness guidance.
