Mexico Opens Maruata Community Hospital With 56 Beds, 11 Cuban Specialists

The facility aims to deliver specialty care to about 50,000 residents in the coastal Nahua region.

Overview

  • President Claudia Sheinbaum and Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla inaugurated the IMSS‑Bienestar hospital in Maruata on October 1 via a live link from the National Palace.
  • The federal government invested more than 330 million pesos to build the site, which is intended to serve roughly 50,000 people, most of them indigenous.
  • The hospital offers 15 consultation rooms, operating theaters, an emergency area, X‑ray, a laboratory, and a pharmacy reported as stocked above 95%.
  • Initial staffing includes 55 nurses, three radiologists, two dentists, and 11 Cuban specialist physicians across fields such as surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, geriatrics, traumatology, anesthesiology, immunology, family medicine, and internal medicine.
  • Authorities said the complex will ultimately employ 392 health professionals and noted it replaces a facility affected by the September 2022 earthquake.
