Mexico Opens 'La Mitad del Mundo' in Madrid, Launching Four-Venue Focus on Indigenous Women

Rare loans from across Mexico ground a curatorial reading of Mesoamerican gender in the divine.

Overview

  • Casa de México en España opened the exhibition on Oct. 3–4 in Madrid, and entry is free through Feb. 15, 2026.
  • The show presents 98 works from cultures such as Mexica, Maya, Zapotec and Wixárika, including major artifacts leaving Mexico for the first time.
  • Loans sourced from about 23 museums span stone and ceramic sculpture as well as textiles, basketry, oils and Huichol beadwork.
  • This is the first stop in a four-venue circuit that will also include textiles at Instituto Cervantes, up to 250 pieces at the Museo Arqueológico Nacional and the Queen Red funerary assemblage at the Thyssen-Bornemisza.
  • Framed by Mexico’s 2025 Year of the Indigenous Woman, the initiative was presented as a cultural collaboration by officials including Ambassador Quirino Ordaz and cultural authority Diego Prieto, with curatorship by Karina Romero.
