Mexico Opens Expiry Review of Stainless Steel Import Duties From China and Taiwan

The Economy Ministry will keep the existing per‑kilogram quotas in force during a process launched at the request of Outokumpu Mexinox.

Overview

  • The review was initiated by a decree published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación on October 1 and takes effect October 2, with a 28‑business‑day window for submissions from interested parties.
  • Current duties remain unchanged during the procedure: $0.65 per kilogram on imports from China, $0.05/kg for shipments from Taiwan’s Yuan Long Stainless, and $0.61/kg for Hoka Elements, with other Taiwanese exporters not subject to quotas.
  • The examination covers imports under tariff lines 7219.34.01, 7219.35.02 and 7220.20.03, as well as specified Rule Eight provisions, regardless of the country of shipment.
  • The Secretaría de Economía set an examination period from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025 and an analysis period from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2025.
  • The resolution requires notification to Mexico’s customs and tax authorities (ANAM and SAT) and concerns a product widely used across automotive, transport, appliances and construction supply chains.
