Mexico Opens 24/7 Search Command and Flags CURP Records for People Reported Missing

The government says the measure will create a notification channel to spot post-disappearance use of identity records and speed searches, but its impact depends on completing forensic uploads and technical links.

Overview

  • The Interior Ministry has set up a continuously operating National Search Alert Command Center to coordinate immediate mobilization of security, investigative and search units when a disappearance alert is issued, and the center began operations earlier this month.
  • Authorities will add the legend “Persona con reporte de desaparición” to the CURP of people with active disappearance reports so any use of that identity number triggers notifications to the National Search Commission and cross-checks with public and private databases.
  • The Plataforma Única de Identidad has already located 5,898 people listed as disappeared and the national alert mechanism recorded 1,802 reports from March 6 to May 19, of which 977 remain missing and 825 were located.
  • Officials said the CURP annotation will not automatically block legal transactions; printing the CURP will show the legend, institutions will be notified and a verification process will be launched rather than an automatic denial of service.
  • Federal authorities acknowledge major limits: only four states have fully uploaded data to the National Forensic Database, a review found 46,742 cases with insufficient data for search, and the plan depends on technical integration with hundreds of institutions and a pledged MXN 800 million for forensic strengthening in 2027.
