Mexico Monitors Seismic Flurry After Chiapas Quake Revised to Magnitude 5.8

Operators say the national alert did not trigger because the quake’s initial energy stayed below activation thresholds.

Overview

  • The National Seismological Service revised the Nov. 28 event from magnitude 5.9 near Motozintla to 5.8 with an epicenter north of Huixtla, with later reports listing a shallow depth of about 15 km.
  • SASMEX reported the movement did not merit a national alert because the energy radiated in the first seconds was insufficient, so C5 loudspeakers in Mexico City and phone alerts did not activate.
  • Civil protection in Chiapas implemented monitoring and precautionary evacuations after the quake, which was felt in nearby municipalities and parts of Guatemala, with no significant damage or casualties reported.
  • Further activity included a magnitude 4.0 quake west of Frontera Comalapa on Nov. 29 at 173 km depth and two microquakes in Mexico City’s Álvaro Obregón (M2.2 and M1.9), all without reported damage.
  • Early Nov. 30, the service logged a magnitude 4.1 quake southeast of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, which remained below the thresholds required to activate the alert system.
