Mexico Mobilizes Security Cabinet in Probe of Slain Colombian Musicians

State of Mexico prosecutors are pursuing homicide and kidnapping charges as Colombia urges a rapid clarification and reports describe a cartel message left with the bodies.

Overview

  • The artists, Bayron Sánchez (B‑King) and Jorge Herrera (Regio Clown), were last seen on September 16 in Polanco and were found dead on September 17 near Cocotitlán, with their identities later confirmed by forensic work and family recognition in Tlalnepantla.
  • President Claudia Sheinbaum directed Defense, Navy, the National Guard, the federal prosecutor’s office and the security ministry to coordinate with the Mexico City and State of Mexico prosecutor’s offices on the case.
  • The State of Mexico attorney general’s office opened an investigation for qualified homicide and possible kidnapping, and authorities reported the victims showed signs of violence.
  • Journalistic accounts say a narcomensaje at the scene accused the victims of being “chapulines” and was signed by La Familia Michoacana, though officials have not announced determinations of responsibility.
  • Colombian President Gustavo Petro condemned the killings and his foreign minister pressed Mexico’s counterpart for urgency, while Mexican authorities clarified the disappearance was reported in Mexico City, not Sonora; no arrests have been announced.
