Mexico Measles Outbreak Reaches 6,050 Cases as Sonora Reports New Infections

Health officials urge catch-up vaccination to close immunity gaps.

Overview

  • Sonora added three confirmed cases in the past 24 hours, bringing its 2025 total to 106, according to the federal febrile rash surveillance system.
  • Mexico has recorded measles cases in 29 states and 207 municipalities this year, with the largest totals in Chihuahua (4,481), Jalisco (516), Guerrero (237), Michoacán (227) and Chiapas (127).
  • The country has confirmed 24 deaths through December 19, including 21 in Chihuahua, with additional deaths in Durango, Jalisco and Sonora, and none had documented vaccination.
  • Official data show 60% of confirmed cases are in children aged 1 to 5 and 90.8% of patients lacked a vaccination history, underscoring immunity gaps.
  • Health guidance includes revaccination for adults who have gone more than 12 years without a dose and a third dose for young children, as experts warn measles can spread rapidly and cause severe complications.
