Mexico Logs Weekend Cluster of Small Quakes With No Damage or Seismic Alert

SASMEX kept alarms off because the quakes fell below magnitude–distance thresholds.

Overview

  • SSN confirmed a magnitude 4.3 quake at 06:24 on Oct. 12 southwest of Ciudad de Armería, Colima, at a depth of about 2.2 km.
  • Colima’s civil protection authorities reported no damage following the morning tremor.
  • By 7:00 on Oct. 13, no new earthquakes were listed; on Oct. 12 afternoon SSN recorded minor events in Chiapas, Oaxaca and Baja California with magnitudes roughly 2.4–3.6.
  • SSN’s recent log also includes a magnitude 4.9 event on Oct. 11 northeast of Matías Romero, Oaxaca, at a depth near 123 km.
  • Mexico City’s alert system did not activate because the events did not meet SASMEX trigger criteria, and microseisms below magnitude 4.0 typically allow too little warning time.
