Mexico Logs Three M4.0 Quakes as Peru Registers M4.8 in San Martín

Mexico City's warning system stayed silent because the events fell below SASMEX magnitude–distance thresholds.

Overview

  • Mexico’s National Seismological Service reported three magnitude‑4.0 events early Oct. 21 near San Felipe, Baja California; Atoyac de Álvarez, Guerrero; and La Mira, Michoacán, at depths ranging from 8 km to 44.2 km.
  • State civil protection and fire authorities in the affected Mexican areas reported no damages or injuries following the morning tremors.
  • The recent cluster followed Oaxaca’s persistent activity since Oct. 18–19, including a magnitude 4.2 near Ocotlán de Morelos on Oct. 19 and two Guerrero quakes of 4.1–4.2 on Oct. 20 that also did not trigger Mexico City alerts.
  • Peru’s geophysical institute (IGP/CENSIS) recorded a magnitude 4.8 at 00:24 on Oct. 21, 32 km southeast of Uchiza in San Martín at 15 km depth, with intensity III–IV and no reported damage.
  • Officials emphasized ongoing monitoring by national seismic networks and reiterated preparedness guidance in these high‑seismicity regions.
