Mexico Light-Vehicle Output Falls 6% in September as Year-to-Date Totals Edge Lower

Dealers say the official sales tally misses Chinese brands and are seeking mandatory reporting to close data gaps.

Overview

  • INEGI reported September production at 355,525 vehicles, down 6.09% year over year, with exports slipping 0.3% to 314,656 units.
  • From January to September, output reached 3,021,554 units, a 0.3% decline from a year earlier, while exports fell 0.9% to 2,567,172 units.
  • Company-level results were uneven in September, with General Motors production down 16.9% and Volkswagen down 17.7%, while Nissan’s export activity rose 5.2%.
  • RAIAVL data show 78.8% of Mexico’s light-vehicle exports went to the United States, underscoring the sector’s reliance on U.S. demand.
  • INEGI’s figures indicate a slight year-to-date dip in domestic sales, but AMDA estimates a 4.5% increase when non-reporting Chinese brands are included and has asked the Economy Ministry to require standardized reporting.
