Mexico Leads Americas in Measles Deaths as Case Count Tops 4,600

OPS links the surge to low vaccination coverage, urging urgent catch-ups.

Overview

  • Mexico’s latest tally lists 21 deaths and more than 4,630 confirmed cases across 23 states, with Chihuahua reporting most infections and 20 of the deaths.
  • An OPS report through September 9 recorded 19 deaths in Mexico, and the country ranks second in cases behind Canada and ahead of the United States.
  • The Americas have logged 11,313 cases and 23 deaths in 10 countries this year, with Canada, Mexico and the United States accounting for 96% of the regional burden.
  • OPS says over 71% of confirmed cases regionally were unvaccinated, and in Mexico incidence is highest in children 0–4 years followed by adults 25–34.
  • Measles vaccines are free at IMSS, ISSSTE and public clinics, and OPS calls for at least 95% two-dose coverage, rapid vaccination of contacts up to age 39, vitamin A for cases and stronger border surveillance.
