Overview

  • The Semarnat-SEP framework under the Nueva Escuela Mexicana has moved beyond signing to active implementation of environmental projects in basic education.
  • At Secundaria No. 51 students designed and built a “casita del agua” that harvests and purifies rainwater and gutter runoff for drinking and garden irrigation.
  • Participating schools are committing to eliminate single-use plastics and adopt water recycling and circular-economy practices as part of their sustainability actions.
  • The government is seeking resources from the secretariats of Marina, Defensa Nacional and Ciencia y Tecnología to fund youth field experiences in protected areas and at the Islas Marías environmental center.
  • Curricular integration will emphasize interculturality, socio-environmental justice and biocultural heritage alongside community projects in reforestation, biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation.
