Mexico Launches Nationwide Irrigation Overhaul to Free Water for Cities

The initiative moves from planning to execution with early works targeting irrigation districts near major urban centers.

Overview

  • Conagua detailed goals to technify more than 200,000 hectares and recover about 2,800 million cubic meters of water, roughly triple Mexico City’s annual supply.
  • The administration projects investing more than 60 billion pesos over the term to modernize irrigation and redirect recovered volumes for human consumption.
  • Six interventions are already underway in Sinaloa (Río Fuerte, Culiacán-Humaya), Tamaulipas (Bajo Río Bravo, Bajo Río San Juan), Guanajuato (Alto Río Lerma) and Aguascalientes (Pabellón), with about 10 more in bidding between August and October.
  • La Laguna’s project is reported in licitation with a planned start around August 25, while additional tenders cover Sonora, Chihuahua, Morelos, Michoacán and the Valley of Mexico districts.
  • The plan combines upgrades to main conveyance—lining, piping, automated gates and measurement, recovering an estimated 25–40%—with on‑farm leveling and pressurized systems like drip and sprinklers, targeting 30–55% recovery, in coordination with states, producers and Sedena engineers.
