Mexico Launches Nationwide Highway Rehab as First Repaving Trains Begin Work

The plan restores SICT’s in-house roadwork capacity through state-run repaving trains to deliver faster, longer‑lasting fixes.

Overview

  • President Claudia Sheinbaum set a mid‑2026 target for a first pass of rehabilitation across all federal highways, combining deep repaving with targeted pothole repairs.
  • The government procured 30 repaving trains for 1,692 million pesos, with 20 assigned to serve 15 states and 10 dedicated to the Oriente of the State of Mexico.
  • Initial operations began in the State of Mexico on the TexcocoEcatepec and Texcoco–Los Reyes stretches, with work scheduled from 22:00 to 04:00 to limit traffic disruption.
  • An initial block of 10 trains includes 152 specialized machines, and authorities aim to have at least one repaving train in every state by the end of next year, with additional purchases planned in 2026.
  • SICT cites a conservation budget near 17 billion pesos to cover roughly 48,000 kilometers and projects around 37,000 jobs, alongside this year’s 15,470 million pesos already advancing 85% of interventions on 4,000 kilometers, including repairs to about 1,000 kilometers in the southeast affected during Tren Maya construction.
