Mexico Launches National Campaign to Boost Will-Making

Officials say discounted fees, extended notary hours, free legal guidance, statewide notary participation will make wills more accessible so families can secure assets and reduce inheritance conflicts

Overview

  • The federal government has launched the annual “Septiembre, mes del testamento” campaign in coordination with the Colegio Nacional del Notariado Mexicano to promote will-making across all 32 states.
  • The program provides reduced fees, longer service hours including many notarías open on Saturdays, and in-person notary advice to lower barriers for adults seeking to make a legal will.
  • Authorities stressed that any adult can sign a will regardless of wealth and that the initiative aims to prevent family disputes by recording testators’ wishes in a legally valid document.
  • Last year the campaign helped issue 145,461 testaments, a figure officials cite to show the program’s reach and to justify continued discounts and expanded services.
  • The campaign began in 2003 and this edition continues the two-decade policy of state and notary collaboration, a step that could reduce probate delays and legal costs for families while increasing legal certainty for heirs.
