Mexico Launches Monumento Artístico Declaration Process for Museo Experimental El Eco

The agreement’s publication opens a 15-business-day window for evidence submissions ahead of INBAL’s formal review under national heritage law.

Overview

  • On August 5, INBAL published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación the initiation agreement for declaring Museo Experimental El Eco a Monumento Artístico Nacional.
  • Owners, local residents and institutions have 15 business days from publication to present evidence and arguments to INBAL before the procedure advances.
  • INBAL and UNAM’s Dirección General de Artes Visuales conducted detailed studies confirming the museum’s artistic value and integrated community feedback into the evaluation.
  • Designed by Mathias Goeritz in 1953 under his “Manifesto of Emotional Architecture” and restored by UNAM in 2004–05, El Eco exemplifies an experiential, sculptural approach to museum design.
  • After the submission phase, the Secretaría de Cultura and INBAL will assess all records and prepare the final decree for presidential signature.
