Mexico Launches Irrigation Technification Works in Sonora’s Mayo and Yaqui Districts

Officials say the multi-year upgrades will recover water for human consumption.

  • Conagua and Governor Alfonso Durazo kicked off construction on September 25 in Irrigation Districts 038 (Río Mayo) and 041 (Valle del Yaqui).
  • Authorities outlined more than 6,500 million pesos in funding through 2030 with about 600 million slated for 2025 to begin upgrades across more than 20,000 hectares benefiting over nine thousand producers.
  • In District 038, an initial 300 million pesos this year will modernize main and secondary canals, install 69 km of piping, and technify and level 1,500 hectares, with a projected 31.5 million cubic meters recovered for human use.
  • In District 041, a program totaling 4,140 million pesos through 2030—starting with 300 million this year—covers canal rehabilitation, 80 deep wells, 25 pumping plants, drip systems on 9,100 hectares, and an expected recovery of about 100 million cubic meters.
  • Officials said 2025 tasks include lining more than 26 km of canals, rehabilitating structures and wells, and technifying over 1,200 hectares, targeting aggregate savings above 130 million cubic meters under the federal México se Tecnifica Plan Hídrico.
