Mexico Launches Formal Preparations for 2026–27 Election Cycle

Electoral authorities say the coordinated planning aims to secure a smooth nationwide vote on June 6, 2027 across simultaneous local contests.

Overview

  • The Instituto Nacional Electoral will formally start the federal process on Thursday, Sept. 10, with an operational plan that lists 505 activities, 153 projects and 44 institutional processes to prepare the June 6, 2027 voting day.
  • The Instituto Electoral de la Ciudad de México has opened local preparatory work and created two provisional commissions to form and monitor 33 district councils and to investigate alleged irregularities by district council members.
  • The Instituto Electoral de Michoacán approved an integral plan and calendar that sets precampaign windows for the gubernatura from Jan. 4 to Feb. 12, 2027 and fixes Feb. 12 as the deadline for independent-candidate support collection.
  • Michoacán’s electoral body reduced its requested budget increase from 78.7 million to 50.9 million pesos after a federal constitutional reform postponed some judicial contests, and local authorities said funds will cover ballot production, PREP operation and procurement.
  • Officials are emphasizing inclusion and logistics by planning early voting for people with mobility constraints, enabling a migrant deputy for capital residents abroad, and coordinating ballot printing with state workshops to meet the June 6 schedule.
