Mexico Launches Emergency Plan to Restore Connectivity After Veracruz Floods

The effort delivers short-term mobile access for residents through free roaming with temporary service credits as repairs proceed on damaged infrastructure.

Overview

  • Mexico activated an emergency communications plan on Oct. 12–13 to stabilize phone and internet access in Poza Rica and nearby areas where service failed due to collapsed antennas and power interruptions.
  • The response coordinates the electric utility CFE with Altán Redes, Telcel and Bait to keep people connected while network and power restoration continues.
  • Altán Redes enabled Telcel roaming at no cost in the affected Veracruz zones, a measure the company says can benefit roughly 550,000 users.
  • Altán also granted more than 54,000 users of 68 MVNOs free packages that include 2 GB of data, 250 call minutes and 250 SMS to support basic connectivity.
  • Telcel is providing unlimited calls, SMS and WhatsApp plus 500 MB of data from Oct. 13–19 for users in Veracruz municipalities including Poza Rica, Álamo, Papantla, Coyutla, Filomeno Mata, Tepetzintla and Zozocolco de Hidalgo, with coverage also noted for affected areas of Puebla.
