Mexico Launches Bachillerato Nacional Under Nueva Escuela Mexicana

The reform replaces the Comipems entrance exam with guaranteed placement across most public upper‑secondary schools.

Overview

  • SEP reports coverage of about 5.5 million students taught by 421,113 teachers in 21,101 public bachillerato campuses nationwide for 2025–26.
  • Graduates will receive a double credential that pairs general upper‑secondary studies with a technical or professional certificate endorsed by UNAM, IPN, UAM and TecNM.
  • The new model unifies 32 subsystems under a Common Curricular Framework, enabling transfers between institutions without restarting studies.
  • Technical pathways include semiconductors, artificial intelligence, electromobility, nanotechnology, cybersecurity, tourism management, community development and sustainable urbanism.
  • Capacity is being expanded through new campuses, enlargements and afternoon‑shift conversions, with plans reported for 20 new preparatorias, 22 expansions and 35 secondary‑to‑bachillerato conversions.
