Mexico Launches Bachillerato Nacional as New Platform Places 97% in Top Choices

Officials say the reform ends exam-based selection to guarantee a seat for every applicant.

Overview

  • SEP reported 272,793 registered aspirants, with 68.4% assigned to their first choice, 97.4% within their top three, and 68% placed within five kilometers of home.
  • The registration portal remains open through August 28 for about 12,000 students who did not complete their process or only chose UNAM or IPN options.
  • UNAM and IPN retain their own entrance exams, while most other public preparatorias now offer direct access through the “Mi Derecho, Mi Lugar” system.
  • The new Sistema Nacional de Bachillerato introduces a common curricular framework and dual certification—general and technical—endorsed by institutions including UNAM, IPN, UAM and TecNM.
  • Authorities announced an expansion of roughly 37,500 new seats with investment for 20 new high schools, 33 expansions and 35 secondary-to-preparatory conversions.
