Mexico Keeps Jan. 12 School Return as States Delay Hours for Cold Front 27

Local education officials are modifying school hours to protect students during dangerous conditions from Cold Front 27.

Overview

  • The federal Education Ministry confirmed there will be no nationwide suspension, with basic education classes set to resume on Monday, January 12.
  • Mexico’s weather service warned of very low temperatures, heavy rain and a prolonged Norte, with a second winter storm and possible snow or ice through Tuesday, and lows in some areas near −20°C.
  • State authorities announced schedule adjustments: Puebla maintains a 30‑minute winter delay; Tlaxcala shifts to 8:30–13:00 for mornings and 13:30–17:30 for afternoons in 784 schools until further notice; Querétaro primary schools run 08:30–12:30 and 14:00–18:00 through February 20; San Luis Potosí grants a 30‑minute entry tolerance and 30‑minute earlier exit in afternoons through March 21.
  • Nuevo León will not suspend classes, but attendance for basic education is left to parents when temperatures fall below 0°C, with school staff present and normal operations for higher education.
  • Authorities urge families to monitor official notices from SEP, state education secretariats, schools and Civil Protection for any additional local changes as conditions evolve.
