Mexico Issues Multi-State Alert After Chlorine Cylinder Theft in Morelia

Officials warn the water-treatment gas poses a severe inhalation hazard.

  • The SSPC, through the National Civil Protection Coordination, issued an alert to six states—Colima, Jalisco, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Estado de México and Guerrero—after a chlorine gas cylinder was stolen in Morelia, Michoacán.
  • The cylinder belongs to OOAPAS and was taken from the El Retiro well in the Dr. Miguel Silva González neighborhood in Morelia.
  • Authorities circulated identifiers to aid recovery: gray-aluminum cylinder, 68-kilogram capacity, approximately half full, serial number 7107830Y.
  • State and municipal police, with National Guard support, are searching junkyards, open lots, recycling centers and conducting highway checks while disseminating guidance and emergency contacts.
  • Residents are urged not to handle the container, to move away if found and to report immediately to 911 or designated Morelia/OOAPAS numbers, with responders instructed to follow Emergency Response Guidebook Guide 124; no recovery has been announced.
