Mexico, Hidalgo Commit Over 900 Million Pesos in 2026 to Restore Río Tula

The package couples engineering works with tougher oversight to curb pollution and reduce flood risk.

Overview

  • Semarnat detailed a 2026 program that includes 38 km of new drainage collectors across Tula, Atotonilco and Atitalaquia.
  • Authorities will improve operations at the Atotonilco wastewater treatment plant, rehabilitate the CFE facility and build treatment wetlands for the Tula–Salado system.
  • Inspection and surveillance will be reinforced after 53 industry checks in 2025 to prevent and sanction illegal discharges in the basin.
  • The monitoring network, now over 90 manual sites and 21 automatic stations with a visualization center, will be strengthened for transparent tracking.
  • Flood-control and restoration measures include stabilizing 1.6 km of slopes, repairing 2 km of eroded embankments, installing solid-waste retention points, conserving over 1,000 hectares and targeted actions around Endhó Dam with community participation.
