Mexico Floods and Landslides Kill 37 as Troops Race to Reach Cut-Off Towns

Officials warn saturated slopes could fail again as tropical moisture persists.

Overview

  • Mexico’s civil protection set the death toll at 37 across five states, with more than 320,000 power users affected nationwide.
  • Hidalgo reported 22 deaths along with damage to 1,200 homes, 308 schools and 59 health centers, and at least 150 communities without access.
  • Puebla confirmed 9 deaths and damage to over 16,000 homes, while Veracruz reported 5 deaths, 16,000 homes affected and 42 communities isolated.
  • Authorities say 117 municipalities across Hidalgo, Puebla, Veracruz, Querétaro and San Luis Potosí are affected as DN-III-E and Plan Marina deploy thousands to reopen roads and deliver aid.
  • The National Meteorological Service attributes the event to moisture linked to Tropical Storms Priscilla and Raymond and a stationary low-pressure pattern, warning of further rain and renewed flood and landslide risk.
