Mexico Floods and Landslides Kill at Least 37 as Government Expands Relief Operations

Officials blame a late-season tropical system colliding with the Sierra Madre Oriental for the extreme mountain rainfall.

Overview

  • Federal authorities report 37 deaths across a broad swath of central and eastern Mexico, with damage to more than 35,000 homes in at least 117 municipalities.
  • Hidalgo is the worst hit with 22 fatalities, followed by Puebla with nine, Veracruz with five, and Querétaro with one, according to the national update.
  • Nearly 10,000 military personnel have been deployed as soldiers, boats, aircraft and helicopters move supplies, conduct rescues and support shelters for displaced residents.
  • Civil Protection says the rains intensified in 31 of Mexico’s 32 states, triggering river overflows, flash floods, landslides and the collapse of roads and bridges, with power and telecom outages reported.
  • Authorities say the weather systems are weakening but assessments continue in hard-to-reach mountain communities, and casualty and damage figures may be revised.
