Mexico Extortion Hits Decade High as Veracruz Reports Sharp Local Surge

Officials link part of the rise to a new reporting drive; critics say hotline‑heavy efforts miss in‑person shakedowns.

Overview

  • The SESNSP logged 6,880 extortion victims from January to July 2025, an 8% annual increase and the highest total for that span in a decade.
  • Cases rose in 19 states, led by spikes in Chiapas, Mexico City and Puebla, while Campeche, Durango and Oaxaca posted the largest declines; the biggest tallies were in Estado de México, Guanajuato and Mexico City.
  • Federal data indicate 66% of extortion is concentrated in eight entities: Estado de México, Guanajuato, Nuevo León, Mexico City, Veracruz, Jalisco, Guerrero and Michoacán.
  • Since the July launch of the National Strategy against Extortion, authorities report 18,000 calls to 089, including 10,538 extortions not consummated and 6,276 reports of offending phone numbers, with 1,425 cases referred to local prosecutors.
  • Veracruz recorded a 60.7% first‑half jump and created a specialized unit on July 11; after a teacher’s killing in the north, 300 National Guard members and 80 Navy personnel were deployed, as 132 extortion suspects were detained nationwide between July 6 and August 10.
