Overview
- The Secretaría de Educación Pública reported Tuesday that total higher-education enrollment reached 5.8 million students and that national coverage was 46.8 percent, rising to 47.5 percent when the Universidades para el Bienestar Benito Juárez García (UBBJG) and the Universidad Nacional Rosario Castellanos (UNRC) are included.
- Public-institution enrollment grew from 3,417,960 in 2024–2025 to 3,574,610 in 2025–2026, a rise the SEP attributes to the formal incorporation and expansion of UBBJG and UNRC.
- The government authorized 25 additional UBBJG sites to reach 239 campuses, increased UBBJG funding from about 1 billion pesos a year to 2.5 billion in 2025 and 3 billion in 2026, and plans capacity for roughly 99,000 new places in 2026 with longer-term targets above 240,000 students.
- Student support and retention efforts have scaled up with the Jóvenes Escribiendo el Futuro scholarship reported to serve 414,100 beneficiaries with 12,294 million pesos and the Gertrudis Bocanegra transport scholarship reported to aid 55,924 students with 312.2 million pesos.
- The UNRC expanded admissions in the Mexico City metropolitan area by 878 seats, signed a STEM partnership with UNAM to develop science and math degrees, and national infrastructure spending for 2026 includes about 7,334.3 million pesos for upgrades and 3,298 million pesos for 123 expansion projects to increase physical capacity.
