Mexico Expands Avocado Exports to Brazil as Industry Bolsters Sustainability

A recent phytosanitary protocol grants Mexican producers access to Brazil’s 200 million consumers, backed by industry reforestation efforts to mitigate environmental impacts.

  • On July 17, Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture enacted Ordinance SDA/MAPA No. 1336, opening its market to fresh Mexican avocados.
  • Exports are projected to reach 1.34 million tonnes valued at about $4 billion in 2025, with over 80% destined for the United States.
  • Michoacán supplies more than 75% of the country’s avocado output, with the Hass variety accounting for over 96% of production.
  • Domestic demand has climbed to 12.3 kilograms per capita, sustaining more than 300,000 direct and indirect jobs across rural areas.
  • APEAM’s conservation program delivered 690,000 seedlings to 38 municipalities this season, building on 14 years that saw 4.47 million plants produced alongside 4,470 hectares reforested.
