Mexico Designates Ciudad Madera Guerrilla Collective Tomb as Official Memory Site

The decree frames the site as part of efforts to acknowledge past political violence, guaranteeing truth and memory.

Overview

  • An agreement published in the Diario Oficial formalizes the Sitio de Memoria designation on the 60th anniversary of the 1965 Madera barracks assault.
  • The site is the collective grave in the Panteón Municipal de Ciudad Madera holding the remains of Antonio Scobell Gaytán, Arturo Gámiz García, Emilio Gámiz García, Miguel Quiñones Pedroza, Óscar Sandoval Salinas, Pablo Gómez Ramírez, Rafael Martínez Valdivia and Salomón Gaytán Aguirre.
  • The Ciudad Madera municipal government is assigned responsibility for integral protection, conservation and upkeep of the space, including preventing alterations.
  • The measure mandates commemorations, homages and cultural jornadas at municipal and state levels with participation and consultation of the combatants’ relatives.
  • The decree cites investigations attributing the mutilation, public exhibition and common-grave burial of seven fallen fighters to orders from then governor Práxedes Giner Durán, following an attack carried out by 13 members of the Grupo Popular Guerrillero.
