Mexico Puts Guardia Nacional Fully Under Military Command and Sends 1,000 More Soldiers to Sinaloa

The government says the move will expand operational capacity under Sedena to sustain reported drops in violent homicides.

Overview

  • The Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional ordered 1,000 additional Army troops to Sinaloa on Tuesday June 30 to join ongoing operations, a step that reporters say brings 2026 deployments to roughly 2,600 soldiers in the state.
  • President Claudia Sheinbaum used the Guardia Nacional’s seventh anniversary to report the force now has about 125,000–128,000 members, 53 regional coordinations and 590 barracks and to set a government goal of 170,000 personnel by the end of the sexenio.
  • Officials credited GN operations with a 46 percent fall in homicidios dolosos and highlighted cumulative results since 2019 such as more than 45,000 detentions, about 23,000 firearms seized, roughly 213 tonnes of drugs seized and over 2,000 dismantled clandestine labs.
  • The Guardia Nacional was formally integrated into Sedena on October 1, 2024, and military and GN leaders say that change has strengthened training, intelligence, logistics and coordination with the Army and Air Force.
  • Federal authorities and state governors stressed operations will follow the National Law on Use of Force and respect human rights while warning criminal groups use civilians to complicate actions, a dynamic that makes further troop surges and sustained presence likely to remain a key part of strategy.
