Mexico City’s Metro Line 1 To Fully Reopen Sunday After Multi‑Year Overhaul

The relaunch caps years of work to cut waits to about two minutes through new trains plus modern communications.

Overview

  • Full service will resume from Pantitlán to Observatorio on November 16 with the final stations Juanacatlán, Tacubaya and Observatorio reopening.
  • Officials project about 800,000 daily riders once the upgraded line returns to continuous operation.
  • The line will run 39 NM‑22 trains, including 29 newly acquired units, with operations targeting roughly two‑minute headways.
  • Upgrades include around 5,000 surveillance cameras, an LTE communications network, and rebuilt stations; Observatorio features new lighting and signage, cabling for automatic train operation, remodeled vestibules and 13 elevators.
  • City leaders said modernization will move next to Line 3 after Line 1 is back in service, while the Metro fare remains at five pesos.
