Mexico City Unveils Fondeso Overhaul With Seed Grants and Low-Interest Microloans

City officials say the redesign is meant to pull micro and small enterprises into the formal economy.

Overview

  • New operational guidelines create a non-repayable 25,000-peso seed grant and expand microcredits from 10,000 to 100,000 pesos at 0%–3% annual interest.
  • Loan terms set 0% interest for 10,000–30,000 pesos over 12 months, and 3% for amounts above 30,000 up to 100,000 pesos with repayment windows of 24 to 36 months.
  • Seed funding will be delivered in two 12,500-peso installments and each beneficiary will receive technical accompaniment from Fondeso staff.
  • The program carries a 2025 budget of 500 million pesos, including 200 million targeted to women’s economic autonomy initiatives.
  • The rules take effect upon publication in the city’s official gazette, with applications handled free of charge through Fondeso modules across all alcaldías.
