Mexico City Unveils 50-Project Drainage Plan and Delivers Cash Aid After Decades-High Flooding

Officials say subsidence and broken drains demand a metropolitan fix.

Overview

  • The city will start a 50-work hydraulic package funded with 4 billion pesos, prioritizing Iztapalapa, Gustavo A. Madero and Venustiano Carranza, with some projects slated to finish before the 2026 rainy season.
  • Iztapalapa will also get 24 targeted works worth 2.2 billion pesos this year and next, including new collectors and conduits, with initial segments pushed to be ready by May.
  • Emergency payments from a 100‑million‑peso federal–city fund are being distributed on a tiered scale of 8,000 to 50,000 pesos per household based on water depth, covering 3,521 affected homes in Mexico City, including 2,547 in Iztapalapa.
  • Mexico City’s insurance policy was activated to reimburse about 750 additional households, with payouts expected in less than a month.
  • In the State of Mexico, crews finished pumping in Nezahualcóyotl and began cleaning and disinfection for more than 21,000 affected families, as federal teams issue 8,000‑peso grants for home sanitation.
